Sustainable Style: Upcycled Jewelry From Beatrice Holiday

When I first got an email from a designer saying she makes jewelry out of upcycled bike parts, I’ll be honest, I rolled my eyes. There are so many ways for this concept to go wrong.

But when I clicked through to the Beatrice Holiday shop, I was sucked deep inside. It’s full of gorgeous interpretations of Out West style, items you could wear at a music festival or on the streets of NYC. Alisun offered to send me a few things to try out*, and I wrote her back saying, “You need to give me a limit, because I want EVERYTHING.” Everything is made to order (less waste!) so after a couple weeks I got my package in the mail, and it was just as I had hoped.

(Alisun really likes EcoCult, so she hooked you readers up! Use ECOCULT15 for 15% off your order at Beatrice Holiday.)

My favorite item is the fringe necklace, made from a thin road bicycle inner tube. I’ve been layering it onto outfits a few times a week. It’s so versatile! Friends reach out to touch it and are amazed when it turns out to be vegan – not leather!

I’ve been earing this hand harness a lot, too. It’s a great way to edge out an otherwise boring outfit.

When I want something really specific, but ethically made, sometimes I’ll head to a large thrift store like Beacon’s Closet with a list. I got these shoes and hat at Beacon’s in one go.

The cape is a zero-waste creation from a Turkish designer that I got at the Williamsburg, Brooklyn store Soot and Tusk, which carries small and avant guard designers. The jeans are rag & bone, who manufactures mostly in the NYC Garment District.

This is a tank I cut out of an ethically made t-shirt from The Squad. The feather earrings my sister made me.

I also, love, love, love the inner tube body chain by Beatrice Holiday. It really elevates any top, though I recommend putting it over a light-colored piece of clothing so it really pops.
