If you’re a pet owner, you know that our furry friends depend on us to advocate and choose the best options for their health and wellbeing. We’ve already shared human non-toxic and sustainable furniture. Now it’s time for us to help you find the purr-fect item for your cat or dog to safely rest and relax on.

Say goodbye to toxins and hello to ethical and sustainable production. Most of the brands featured have great pet items available to purchase at a variety of price points. (And some offer payment assistance!)

What to look for in your pet’s eco-friendly bedding and furniture

Cats and dogs are also affected more quickly by toxins in the home than humans are. Because they lick their paws after they walk across the floor, they are more prone to health issues such as hyperthyroidism. So it’s even more important to take into account the source of your pet’s bed materials, plus the health impacts of certain mattress materials

Before you buy, take a look at our criteria:

Third-Party Certifications: Ethical and environmental certifications from outside the company confirm that a brand is truly making safe and sustainable products. Look for labels such as GOTS, Fair Trade, and OEKO-TEX to be sure that both the inside and outside of your new pet bed won’t cause any harm.

Natural Materials: In addition to keeping an eye out for certifications, be discerning when it comes to the materials that make up the stuffing and covers. Avoid synthetic foam and fire retardants, and instead choose materials such as merino wool, organic cotton, or natural latex sourced from tree-based rubber. Another benefit of natural fibers is that they release odor, so they’re less likely to become permanently stinky, like synthetics will.

Washable: Pet beds should be simple and easy to clean. Look for beds with removable covers that are made of machine-washable materials.

Avocado is a Los Angeles-based 1% for the planet and B Corp company that provides a detailed annual report on its ethics and environmental impact. As part of the “farm to mattress” company’s circularity and waste reduction strategy, Avocado uses leftover materials from its human furniture collections to create a dog bed frame, mattress, and pillow.

The dog frame bed is made using upcycled wood leftover from the brand’s other furniture pieces which are sustainably sourced in India and certified by GOTS, GOLS Organic Latex, and FSC. The bed frame is durable for larger dogs and free of top air pollutants such as VOCs and MDF caused by furniture paints. The furniture is finished with a non-toxic, zero-VOC stain and varnish. The mattress, pillow, and covers are washable with the option to purchase replaceable inserts.
