You want to know the truth? I’m not a huge vintage/thrift shopper. And I feel like that’s a moral failing. Being good at thrift shopping is like being fashionable, creative, and money smart, all at the same time. It’s also very sustainable because instead of buying something new, you’re recycling something that was already worn by someone else. So yeah, I would love to be good at thrift shopping.
But I’m just not that into it. My friend Karen once said shoppers can be put into two categories: hunters and farmers. Hunters love to seek out their prey. They dig and search and when they find that one piece, it’s an adrenaline rush. Farmers like things lined up in rows for the picking. They like things categorized and in order. I’m a farmer.
Still, every once in a while I find myself dressed almost head to toe in vintage fashion. Like this outfit. This vintage sweater that I got at a Queens flea market is such high quality, I know it’s going to be in my closet for a long time. The mom jeans are reworked ones from Reformation – they cut the bottom and then put in a dart to give them the right shape. I guess you could call
them a new/thrift combo. My boyfriend hates them but whatever. We don’t always dress for our men, do we? The purse I picked up when my friend Adriana was clearing out her vintage stock from her store, Mode Marteau, so she can focus on jewelry.
The top is American Apparel, which I’m pretty torn about. Setting aside all the sleeziness surrounding the former CEO (who has since been replaced by a female CEO, yay!) they say they manufacture in the United States. But a little birdie (employee of a store that is owned by American Apparel) told me that they manufacture a bunch of stuff in China too, and that it’s in fine print somewhere on their website. Not sure where. I’m sorry for speculating. It’s not very journalistic of me, but I just can’t find anything anywhere on it, except for some speculation last summer on whether American Apparel will continue to manufacture in L.A.
Oh, and yes, you’ve seen this jacket before. But I’m not gonna run out and buy five coats just so I don’t repeat on this blog. Please, what kind of fashion blogger do you think I am?
P.S. Thank you to Elizabeth of The Note Passer for taking these photos on the fly!
