I entirely missed New York Fashion week while traveling! That’s OK. Now that things have calmed down a bit, let’s talk about what’s on the docket…

hillsLast Weekend: Governor’s Island Hills

Thru September 25, Monday-Friday | 10 am – 6 pm, Saturday/Sunday | 10 am – 7 pm.

This newly designed acres of park on Governors Island used to be a military base, but now includes huge slides, sculptures, a scramble, paths, and an outlook with incredible views, and are constructed of recycled demolition debris, general fill and lightweight pumice, stabilized with geotechnical reinforcement and covered with shrubs, trees and grassy lawns, and improve the island’s resilience in the face of increasingly dramatic weather patterns and rising sea levels. They are home to more than 860 new trees and 41,000 new shrubs planted in new high-quality topsoil and protected from brackish groundwater by the new topography.

Sunday September 25 | 12 to 2:30 pm @ 141 S.5th St. Office East, Brooklyn

Learn the basics of macramé knotting techniques and complete a hanging plant hanger in this workshop by Prissage Studio, a textile exploration project founded by Ahna Hughes. Each student’s plant hanger will vary in length, but materials will be supplied for a plant hanger that will hang about 40” long. All materials and supplies are included – bakers twine, 3 strand cotton rope and various glass planters to choose from.

trashLet’s Talk Trash

Tuesday, September 27 | 6:30 to 9:30 pm @ ReVision Lounge and Gallery – 219 Avenue B, Manhattan

Four trashy start-ups compete for a cash prize. Attendees vote on the pitch that best demonstrates its ability to help NYC reach its 0x30 goal (zero waste to landfills by 2030). The competitors include Repeat RosesIndustrial/OrganicGo Box, and my personal favorite, FABSCRAP. Each Talk Trash City event will comprise of 3-4 presentations to a panel of expert judges and guests in attendance. After each ~7 minute presentation, the judges will comment on the presentation and have an opportunity to ask questions. And there will be time for networking with friends and colleagues.

Photographer, researcher and storyteller, Eric Mindling gives you a glimpse into his historical documentary project, Living Threads: Oaxaca’s Traditional Dress and the People Who Wear It. With sweeping portraiture, insights into a changing world, and the sharing of his personal motives to undertake this two year project, Mindling will open your eyes to a wondrous land and diversity of people.

s_gelatoSweetcycle Bicycle Powered Gelato Making Workshop

Pedal the Sweetcycle, a stationary bike capable of pedal powering an ice cream churn. Kate Zuckerman, pastry chef and owner of the Sweetcycle, will discuss the science behind ice cream and gelato making: what gels make the perfect custard; the correct chilling temperatures to minimize ice crystal formation; the optimal dasher shape and speed to churn the gelato; and the best ratios of cream and milk for taste and texture.
