Minimalism is one of those trends that may prove to be truly evergreen. With the hustle of modern life and the instability of the current political climate, it’s refreshing to find products that are simply made and easy to use. Kaliks Collective, a brand of handcrafted, small batch skincare, truly exemplifies the basic tenets of minimalism.
The story behind Kaliks Collective is familiar: founder Allison Hodge suffered from skin issues for many years and, unable to find products to soothe her own skin, she began learning to make her own. Research is at the core of Kaliks Collective’s philosophy, and Allison studied functional medicine and herbs while earning certifications as a Western Herbalist and a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. She is currently working to earn a diploma in Organic Skincare Formulation. This dedication to the science behind the ingredients is evident within her products, as each is carefully formulated with with no more than 12 ingredients that offer medicinal and healing effects.
As someone with sensitive skin, I was fortunate to try all four of Kaliks Collective’s products, and each item is gentle and soothing. Currently, the line features a cleanser, hydrosol, facial oil, and bath soak. A perfume oil is in the works and will be released soon. Kaliks Collective is ideal for all skin types, and the products work well together, too.
The Cleanse-Renew Facial Cleanser is a powder that can be used as a cleanser when mixed with water, or a mask when combined with honey, yogurt, or the hydrosol. It contains soothing ingredients including oats, Rhassoul clay, marshmallow root, and rosehip seed, all of which possess wonderful cleansing properties. My favorite way to use the cleanser is as a mask mixed with honey after washing my face. It gently exfoliates and soothes my skin.
The Mist-Revive Lavender Hydrosol is my favorite product in the line, and it is made from distilled organic lavender. I love to use it as a hydrating spray throughout the day, and it is cooling during the hot summer months. The hydrosol is incredibly gentle and can also be used as a toner after cleansing. It’s versatility makes it perfect for use with both the cleanser and the facial oil.
The Balance-Glow Facial Oil is light and lovely and works incredibly well after cleansing. It contains just a few ingredients, including marula, baobab, and carrot seed oils, as well as neroli and rose geranium essential oils, which give it a gorgeous scent. Rose geranium is especially soothing for the skin, and combined with these wonderful carrier oils, the facial oil is perfect for use in the morning and at night. I also like to apply it to my arms and then run my fingers through my hair to add a bit of scent after I wash my face each evening.
Kaliks Collective’s Immerse-Escape Bath Soak is a luxurious bath product that soothes tired muscles and provides aromatherapy while you relax. My young boys are gymnasts, and I add the bath soak to their baths to help soothe any bruises or pulled muscles they get during practice. My seven-year-old son especially loves the scent and asks for the bath soak on a nightly basis. I have found it to be incredibly useful for at-home pedicures, and adding a small amount to a foot bath is a perfect way to soften your skin, too. The jar itself is quite large and the blend of salts and essential oils makes this bath soak a wonderful investment.
Kaliks Collective is a line full of beneficial and carefully sourced ingredients with handcrafted products that will soothe and comfort your skin. If you’re looking for a bit of simplicity in your skincare routine, I’d recommend giving them a try.
