This lecture will adress, “Thriving in a Dynamic Environment: A New Vision for Public Health.” There are a tremendous number of factors driving change in our environment. From climate change to international trade and travel to industrial pollution, humans are altering local and global ecosystems, with unexpected and unprecedented effects on our health. What are the effects we are already seeing, and how can we prepare for what’s to come? How can public health policies and individual action help keep us healthy and thriving in the 21st century. The lectures will be by Lynn Sherr, an award-winning correspondent for ABC News’ “20/20 and published author, and Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D., a former commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and currently serving as foreign secretary for the National Academy of Medicine. An internationally recognized expert in infectious disease, bioterrorism and emergency preparedness, global health, and public health policy, Dr. Hamburg has also served as assistant secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services, health commissioner of New York City, and founding vice president for biological programs at the Nuclear Threat Initiative.

The 2013 Rana Plaza building collapse was a structural failure that occurred on Wednesday, 24 April 2013 in the Savar Upazila of Dhaka, Bangladesh where an eight-story commercial building named Rana Plaza collapsed. With a death toll of 1,130 and approximately 2,500 injured it is considered the deadliest garment-factory accident in history, as well as the deadliest accidental structural failure in modern human history. Every April, Fashion Revolution Day brings everyone in the fashion value chain together to help to raise awareness about the ethical and environmental challenges of the fashion industry. This year, join the BF+DA on April 28th, for a film screening of Andrew Morgan’s The True Cost movie followed by a clothing swap. All leftover donations will be taken away and recycled by Brooklyn-based Wearable Collections.
