Indigo Workshop

The Dogwood Dyer has quit NYC, but is back for a special workshop this February! Unlike most modern indigo dye vats that are prepared quickly with a chemical reducing agent, this workshop will use only sugar and natural ingredients to activate the indigo dyeing power of our vat. It is based on the traditional vats of Morocco, India and Provence and was developed and revived by Michel Garcia, one of the world’s leading experts on natural dye traditions. No previous dyeing knowledge necessary. Each participant will leave with various types of indigo dyed fabrics. Each participant may also bring a small or medium sized garment of natural fabric (wool, silk, cotton, linen, hemp, etc.) to dye in the vat. (leather and shoes made of natural materials will work too!) Each participant will also leave with a resources list and instructional guide on how to repeat the process at home.

Students will learn how to hand weave their own tapestry wall hanging on a lap loom. All materials for weaving and learning techniques are included, but students are encouraged to bring fibers (yarns or string) and objects they would like to incorporate in their tapestries. (Note weaving is a slow process and you won’t be able to finish a complete wall hanging but each student will take home their 12″x12″ loom & enough yarns to continue the exploration.)

The annual Just Food Conference will bring together over 700 organizers, community leaders, CSA members, local food advocates, urban and rural farmers, food professionals, entrepreneurs, and members of the press to participate in a full day of trainings, panels, policy discussions, and good food. Just Food’s Conference programming covers national farm and food policy issues, approaches to urban agriculture, culinary and food preservation techniques, and strategies to mobilize communities in order to increase access to fresh, locally grown food. This year the six farmers of Rise & Root Farm will deliver the Keynote Address.

The Value of Food: Sustaining a Green Planet is an art exhibition hosted by the Cathedral, in keeping with its long history of engagement with issues of social justice, the environment, support for the arts, and community involvement. Guest curated by Kirby Gookin and Robin Kahn, the exhibition focuses on food security, accessibility, and sustainability by bringing together artists who not only grapple with these issues, but also actively engage the audience. Installed in the bays and chapels inside the Cathedral, as well as throughout the gardens, the exhibition is divided into seven thematic sections: Water, Soil, Seed, Farm, Market, Meal, and Waste—a reflection of the cycle of food production. Additionally, the Cathedral will host a number of presentations and workshops by speakers who make community outreach and participation a central part of their practice. These programs will include—but are not limited to—panels on urban farming, labor rights, the history of the dishes that many of us know and love, and the relationships between food and faith.

csdsCSDS Sustainability Crash Course 2016

Imagine being able to spend one amazing day immersed in learning about sustainable design—and meeting the people who have pioneered new thinking and practices. Pratt’s CSDS will present the sixth annual Sustainability Crash Course, a day-long series of workshops with a host of experts from Pratt’s sustainable design faculty and elsewhere. With over 20 speakers, it represents an excellent intro for those fresh to the sustainable fashion world.
