Review: Vyayama’s Eco-Friendly Yoga and Athletic Clothing With Minimalist NYC Style

Minimalist eco-friendly black yoga athletic clothing

Look, I love me some sunset colors and vaguely tribal patterns as much as the next girl. But why do eco-friendly yoga and athletic brands seem to think we all want to dress like we just emerged from a sweatlodge ceremony in Joshua Tree? I’m a New Yorker. I don’t want to wear my southwestern-inspired yoga pants to a 6 am spin class. I want boss bitch clothes that make me feel like a grownup and fit into my capsule, minimal wardrobe, which is all black and white. And if it’s holistically sustainable, all the better.

Eco-friendly minimalist athletic clothing

Of course, I was super excited to try out the new athletic brand VYAYAMA, a minimalist, mix-and-match yoga/athletic gear that feels so now, so New York. They sent me an on-point sports bra and shorts in the Tencel shadowprint, and a 90% Modal and 10% cashmere layering top to try.* And I can report they hit the trifecta of style, performance, and sustainability.

Eco-friendly sports bra

The Tencel sports bra has a cute, strappy racerback. In the front, it clutches my bouncy boobs firmly. You might think, looking at it, that it is too sexy (that sassy dip!) to do a good job, but after a spin class of furiously doing pushups on my bike with the mirror right in front of me, I was confident that the the fabric stayed exactly where it needed to be – which is more than can be said for some other sports bras I own! The high-waisted shorts are a great alternative on a hot day to yoga pants. (By the way, Tencel is an eco-friendly, sweat-wicking, textile that is made from sustainably-farmed, eucalyptus tree wood pulp cellulose and a closed-loop solvent system.)

And the Modal-cashmere sweater feels soft and has just the right amount of transparency. I like knotting it up because I do that with literally every shirt I wear these days, but you can wear it long, too. It hits right at the hip. (Modal is an eco-friendly, soft textile made from Beechwood pulp.) All fabric components are certified Oeko-Tex standard 100, with no toxins and no-irritation Cupro care labels.

By the way, the sunglasses are by Capital Eyewear. They’ll be getting their own post later this week!

While I did not try it, if you would like an even more minimalist look, you can get something made with VYAYAM’s KALABLAK™ fabric: tencel with black Italian elastane. VYAYAMA claims that all of their 11 mix-and-match garments are breathable, gentle against the body, easy care, shrink-resistant, wrinkle-resistant, never fade, naturally anti-odor, non-toxic, hypo-allergenic and biodegradable.

I’m already plotting the next pieces I’m going to buy. Maybe the bralette? No, no, the shadow leggings. Arg, I can’t decide!

*For free. As always, free items are meant to let me try and review and do not guarantee a positive write up. My first priority is helping readers decide if it’s right for them!
