In order to bolster the cycle of consumption, manufacturers are encouraged to engineer products to fail and quickly become obsolete. On the one hand, this precarious model creates and builds industry as it accelerates innovation, however, this inevitable cycle ignores the less obvious implications of the detrimental effect on both the environment and on the consumer. This solo exhibition by Daniel Horowitz will feature a selection of paintings and mixed media collages examining notions of identity, reality, and our precarious existence in the face of globalization and mass consumerism. Horowitz’s practice criticizes our lust over the disposable, as he repurposes imagery form discarded vintage advertising, encyclopedias and History books, as source of inspiration or as a direct surface of intervention.

It takes over 700 gallons of water to manufacture one cotton t-shirt and one-third of a pound of pesticides to grow the cotton used for its production. And that is just the beginning, since almost half of the environmental impact of an apparel item comes from consumer use and “end of life,” resulting in 14.3 million tons of textile waste generated every year in the United States alone. Curious to know what all this means and what we can do to limit the environmental and social impacts of the clothing we wear every day? This month, the forum will explore the subject of eco and ethical fashion. You’ll discuss the current state of the industry and introduce designers and manufactures working to build a greener future for the apparel sector. Vegan Fashion: Issues and Innovations in Sustainability

Where cruelty-free meets eco-friendly: The Ethical Writers Coalition Presents a round-table discussion on vegan fashion and sustainability. This exciting event in Brooklyn features moderator Joshua Katcher (adjunct professor at Parsons The New School, founder of Brave Gentleman, and editor at The Discerning Brute), with fellow vegan fashion designers discussing the challenges and latest innovations, from high-tech, low-impact synthetics to lab-grown leather. It’s a must for aspiring designers, stylish vegans, and anyone interested in sustainable fashion. Join us for an inspiring conversation over refreshments from Little Choc Apothecary. Ask questions, meet the designers, and learn what’s next for cruelty-free design. Panelists include Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart of Vaute Couture, Melanie Linehan of animal behavior, and Sugandh G. Agrawal of GUNAS. Anyone who wants to head to Kent Ale House across the street after the event is also welcome to join us for drinks!

Join Slow Food NYC at this competitive, all-duck “quack” down, where dueling chefs will deliver delectable duck dishes for your delight. Sample spirits made in New York featuring ingredients grown in New York. Pouring beverages at the event are Breuckelen Distilling, Van Brunt Stillhouse and Kings County Distilling, with more to come. Proceeds from this event will benefit the non-profit Slow Food NYC Urban Harvest program supporting good food education for New York City kids at 16 schools around the city and on an educational, urban farm in East New York, Brooklyn.

Simone Cipriani, founder of the Ethical Fashion Initiative, a flagship program of the International Trade Centre, will talk about EFI’s efforts to propel the international fashion industry in Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso and Kenya, and how EFI enables artisans living in urban and rural poverty to connect with the global fashion chain, while encouraging the use of sustainable, environmentally sound materials and practices.

In this workshop, students will learn the basics of dyeing a silk fabric with natural materials using the ice dyeing method. Will also learn the basics of mordants and natural dye sources. Each student will take home one large silk scarf and two smaller handkerchiefs. Instructor Lily Piyathaisere is a fiber artist, jewelry designer and graphic designer living in Brooklyn, New York. She is the founder of the fiber and ceramic based accessories line, Gamma Folk.

Ready for Spring? Celebrate the budding season with a full day of floral workshops. Debra Prinzing of slowflowers.com and the Ethical Writers Coalition are teaming up with local florists and creatives to bring you Bloom: A Sustainable Workshop! Learn to make your own fresh flower crown, create a perfect bouquet, or DIY a reclaimed vase. Join one or all of these intimate classes for a hands-on and creative experience in sustainability, and of course, lovely local flowers.

11 am: Xristina from La Vie Rosie 

Participants will create a fresh flower and herb crown to wear that day and then learn how to dry and reuse it for a second life!

1:30 pm: Stella and Miriam of The Garden Apartment 

An interactive design workshop on reclaimed materials and minimal construction. Participants will create a self-constructed vessel ready to hold local flowers!


4 pm: Rachel of Taproot and Molly and Deborah from Molly Oliver Flowers

Local Flowers 101: Growing & Arranging. Learn their flower arranging tips & tricks, the importance of sustainable flowers, and how to best care for your arrangement.
