Governor’s Island Hills Now Open

The Trust for Governors Island announces the opening of the Hills, ten newly designed acres of park on Governors Island that include slides, art and unparalleled harbor views. Designed by acclaimed landscape architects West 8 urban design & landscape architecture, the opening of the Hills marks a major milestone in the transformation of Governors Island from an abandoned military base into an iconic destination for New Yorkers and visitors alike. Opening nearly a year ahead of schedule, the four Hills include huge slides, sculptures, a scramble, paths, and an outlook with incredible views. The Hills are constructed of recycled demolition debris, general fill and lightweight pumice, stabilized with geotechnical reinforcement and covered with shrubs, trees and grassy lawns, and improve the island’s resilience in the face of increasingly dramatic weather patterns and rising sea levels. They are home to more than 860 new trees and 41,000 new shrubs planted in new high-quality topsoil and protected from brackish groundwater by the new topography. The new lawns, plantings and permeable paving also reduce erosion and storm run-off, while allowing for water collection and irrigation.
Solid Gold Supper
For NYC Honey Week’s 3rd Annual Solid Gold Supper, the Grange is teaming up with the beekeepers-turned-distillers at Caledonia Spirits, and Chef Arden Lewis of Purslane to present a family style celebration of honey, bees, and the producers who help protect them! Throughout the night, you’ll feast on the bounty of September harvests, with a multi-course, family style banquet showcasing local honey-touched dishes, and paired with craft cocktails made from sustainably-raised grain. Beekeepers will be seated amongst the guests, ready to regale you with tales of their favorite queens.

New Yorkers go through hundreds of millions of plastic shopping bags, coffee cups, take-out clamshells, soda straws, and other single-use items every day – all in the name of convenience. But that short-term convenience comes with long-term costs to the environment and our health. Journalist Susan Freinkel, author of Plastic: A Toxic Love Story, talks about how the rise of plastic helped create a culture of convenience and how to live with the disposables we can’t seem to do without.

You are cordially invited to Slow Food NYC’s 5th Annual (s)low down at Threes Brewing in Gowanus, Brooklyn! Celebrate the 2016 Snailblazer honoree, Hot Bread Kitchen Founder Jessamyn Rodriguez. The ‘Snailblazer’ award is a designation granted to those leaders in the farm-to-table movement committed to a local, sustainable, and fair food system. Party proceeds benefit Slow Food NYC’s programs including Urban Harvest, Good Food education programs in 15 NYC schools and a summer educational farm in East New York, Brooklyn. The (s)low down this year will be quite a party in the backyard at Threes Brewing, a celebrated brewery bar and event space in Gowanus, Brooklyn featuring beer, wine and small bites curated by The Meat Hook.
